This page should collect use cases of FreeMind. How granular the split of uses cases should be is now open. Also unclear is whether the expression "use case" as used in this page conforms to the use in software engineering.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Use_case) Different use cases evoke different model application.

Mind mapper

In mind mapping, folding is of secondary importance.(Really?) Mind maps are relatively small, sometimes to be printed on one sheet of paper.

Model application: MindManager and other mind mappers.

Knowledge base keeper

For knowledge base keeper, folding, speed and low memory footprint is key. The size of a knowledge base created in FreeMind can reach 13 MB, says personal experience.

Model application: Windows registry editor, file system browser, Microsoft Office, OpenOffice.

Add the ability to cross-link ideas and follow the links easily. The tool needs to maintain the cross-links so there are no internal broken links. A knowledge base may be much "flatter" and "wider" than a mind map, with heavy cross-linking.
